JF1148 || This small Koru Spiral carved from Wyoming Cherry Blossom Nephrite Jade - Necklace – by Joe Foster

Wyoming Cherry Blossom Nephrite Jade Hei Matau with Manaia, Koru, & Pāua Eye

Sculpted from rare Cherry Blossom Nephrite Jade from Wyoming—a stone renowned for its exceptional toughness paired with delicate, blooming inclusions—this taonga (treasured carving) weaves together protection, renewal, and spiritual vigilance.

The overall silhouette takes the form of a hei matau (fish hook), the traditional symbol of prosperity, determination, and safe travel over land and sea. The opening of the hook curves into an unfurling koru (fern frond), representing new beginnings, peace, and continuous growth. Integrated seamlessly into the body of the hook is a manaia, a sacred spiritual guardian depicted with the head of a bird, body of a human, and tail of a fish. Serving as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms, the manaia acts as a protective shield against negative energy while safeguarding the wearer’s mana (spiritual authority).

Set into the head of the guardian is a brilliant pāua (abalone) shell eye. Representing spiritual perception, light, and keen awareness, the iridescent eye endows the manaia with sight to watch over the wearer, ward off harm, and illuminate the path ahead.
