Guatemalan Jadeite Kōuma with Hei Matau, Koru, & Pāua Inlay

Carved from dense Guatemalan Jadeite—a stone revered across ancient Mesoamerican cultures as a symbol of life, breath, and sacred endurance—this piece unites distinct traditions of stonecraft and symbolism.

The overall silhouette takes the form of a kōuma (breastplate), a motif associated with protection, leadership, and guarding one’s inner mana (spiritual strength). Nested within the solid presence of the kōuma, negative space defines a hei matau (fish hook), the classic symbol of prosperity, resilience, and safe passage over land and sea. The hook itself is sculpted by the flowing, unfurling line of a koru (fern frond), representing peace, self-renewal, and continuous growth.

Set into the base of the pendant is an iridescent pāua shell inlay. In traditional carving, pāua represents spiritual sight and illumination. Here, it signifies the watchful eyes of the tīpuna (ancestors), offering continuous guidance, protection, and connection to those who came before.
